Inizio con la domanda di rito, chi è Tony nella vita di tutti i giorni? Qual è la sua giornata tipo?

Toni è una persona che odia la mattina presto e passa la maggior parte del tempo a lavorare. Una giornata tipica prevede il controllo della posta elettronica, il passeggio con il cane, la colazione e quindi l'immersione nel lavoro (scrittura / modifica / attività di pubblicazione / promozione). Continuo a lavorare fino alle 19:00 circa quando mi ritrovo a cena con la famiglia e poi trascorro del tempo con loro o finisco qualunque cosa stavo facendo. Quando scrivo un nuovo libro ho un obiettivo di conteggio delle parole,  a volte raggiungo quel conteggio delle parole a mezzogiorno e talvolta a mezzanotte.

Beginning with the customary question, who is Tony in everyday life? What is your typical day?

Toni is someone who hates early mornings (J) and spends most of her time working. A typical day involves checking email, walking the dog, breakfast, and then diving into work (writing/editing/publication tasks/promo). I carry on working until around 7 PM when I figure out dinner with the family, and then I either spend time with them or finish whatever I was working on. When I am writing a new book I have a word count target, and sometimes I hit that word count at noon and sometimes midnight. 

Com’è stata la sua esperienza di pubblicazione italiana? Che rapporto ha con i suoi lettori?

La mia esperienza editoriale italiana è stata fantastica! Non avevo piani imminenti per tradurre i miei libri in italiano, quindi quando Hope Edizoni mi ha avvicinato ho pensato, perché no? Ho adorato lavorare con loro. Le mie relazioni con i lettori? Bene, come probabilmente saprai, sono andata a Roma a settembre per fare il firmacopie e ho incontrato molti lettori entusiasti, il che è stato fantastico! Sono anche attiva sui social media, che si tratti di Facebook, Instagram e ho una newsletter che invio. Sfortunatamente, è tutto in inglese, non in italiano. 

How was your Italian publishing experience? What relationship do you have with your readers?

My Italian publishing experience has been fantastic! I had no imminent plans to translate my books into Italian, so when Hope Edizoni approached me I figured, why not? I have loved working with them J. My relationships with readers? Well, as you probably know, I traveled to Rome in September for a book signing and met lots of enthusiastic readers, which was amazing! I’m also active on social media, be it Facebook, Instagram, and I have a newsletter I send. Unfortunately, it is all in English though, not Italian. L

Che tipo di scrittrice è, metodica, da scalette e ricerche serrate o è più istintiva e da appunti volanti?

Sono abbastanza metodica una volta entrata nel mio groove. Mi piace avere un contorno della trama anche se si trasforma e cambia mentre scrivo. Faccio molte ricerche in anticipo, ma quando sono davvero immersa nella scrittura del giorno, prendo appunti di cose che devo ricercare in seguito per non disturbare il flusso.

What kind of writer is, methodically, from tight schedules and research or is it more instinctive and flying notes?

I am fairly methodical once I get into my groove. I like to have a plot outline even though it morphs and changes as I write. I do a lot of research beforehand but when I am actually immersed in the day’s writing, I make notes of things I need to research later so as not to disturb the flow. 

Avrebbe il coraggio di mettersi in gioco da zero e inviare il suo ultimo manoscritto ad una casa editrice firmandosi con uno pseudonimo sconosciuto?

Sì, lo farei

Would you have the courage to get involved from scratch and send your latest manuscript to a publishing house by signing with an unknown pseudonym?

Yes, I would J

Se le venisse proposto di scrivere un romanzo a 4 mani con un altro scrittore/scrittrice, chi vorrebbe al suo fianco?

Bene, Nora Roberts sicuramente LOL!

If you were asked to write a 4-handed novel with another writer / writer, who would you like by your side?

Well, Nora Roberts for sure LOL! 

Tra tutti i suoi scritti qual è quello che le ha dato più filo da torcere e perché? E quello invece che le ha dato più soddisfazioni?

La maggior parte dei problemi? Probabilmente segreti segreti. Era solo una storia difficile da scrivere dall'argomento all'ubicazione (ero in Giappone al momento). Più soddisfazione? The Killing Game. Sento che tutto si è unito come doveva essere per quella storia.

Among all your writings what is the one that gave you the most trouble and why? And what instead gave you more satisfaction?

Most trouble? Probably Cold Secrets. It was just a tough story to write from subject matter to location (I was in Japan at the time). Most satisfaction? The Killing Game. I feel like it all came together as it was meant to for that story.

Noi siamo la somma unica e irripetibile delle esperienze che abbiamo vissuto, in che modo pensa che la sua storia personale abbia influenzato le storie che ha raccontato?

In tanti modi! Penso che la cosa più importante dell'essere uno scrittore sia la capacità di provare empatia. Sono cresciuta senza molti soldi ma con un cuore infuocato. Ho perseguito la scienza per molti anni e mi sono piaciuti molto quegli anni di studi. Ho viaggiato molto con il lavoro, il che ha allargato ulteriormente i miei orizzonti. Ho imparato a fare ricerche e a scrivere. Poi sono diventata una madre che ha cambiato ancora una volta la mia prospettiva. Penso che stiamo sempre cambiando, crescendo e ampliando la nostra visione del mondo e la nostra capacità di entrare in empatia - almeno, questo è ciò che credo che dovremmo fare.

We are the unique and unrepeatable sum of the experiences we have lived, how do you think your personal history influenced the stories you told?

In so many ways! I think the most important thing about being a writer is the ability to feel empathy. I grew up without a lot of money but with a fiery heart. I pursued science for many years and thoroughly enjoyed those years/studies. I traveled extensively with work, which widened my horizons further. I learned how to research and how to write. Then I became a mother which changed my perspective yet again. I think we are always changing and growing and expanding our world-view, and our capacity to empathize—at least, that’s what I believe we should be doing.

Osservare... È vero che quando si inizia a scrivere, la capacità di osservazione viene allenata davvero in modo incredibile? Ci sono altre cose che ha notato si amplificano durante la scrittura?

A parte i dolori e i dolori del corpo? Penso che ogni volta che affini un'abilità, tutto ciò che appartiene a quell'arena si affina. Penso che gli scrittori guardino tutto ciò che accade loro e altri, in termini di storia, a volte questo può sembrare un po 'insensibile per i non scrittori. Non è inteso in questo modo, stiamo solo cercando di dare un senso alle cose.

Observe ... Is it true that when you start writing, the ability to observe is really incredibly trained? Are there any other things you noticed are amplified during writing?

Aside from the body’s aches and pains? I think whenever you hone a skill everything pertaining to that arena is sharpened. I think writers look at everything that happens to them, and others, in terms of story, sometimes this can seem a little callous to non-writers. It isn’t meant that way, we’re just trying to make sense of things.

Per terminare le chiedo una frase che ha scritto o semplicemente letto che in qualche modo la rappresenta o le è particolarmente cara?

Tolkien "Non tutti coloro che vagano, sono persi". Lo sento nelle mie ossa.

To finish, I ask you for a phrase that you have written or simply read that somehow represents it or is particularly dear to you?

Not all those who wander are lost, by Tolkien. I feel this in my bones.
